An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
